Speaker: Freda Funnye of Neighborhood Services of Myrtle Beach
Lauren Zuschlag, our Club’s Immediate Past President, introduced Freda Funnye who is a Neighborhood Services Coordinator for the city of Myrtle Beach’s Neighborhood Services Department. Freda is a graduate of Myrtle Beach High school and Horry-Georgetown Technical College. She is now pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work at Liberty University. Freda is a member of Multiplying Good, Grand Strand Young Professionals, and Kingston Lake Missionary Baptist Association. Also in attendance with Freda was Cookie Goings, Director of the Neighborhood Services Department.
The Neighborhood Services Department enforces the city’s commitment to building healthy and vibrant neighborhoods. The department is located within City Hall and focuses on enriching the community to facilitate neighborhood growth. It provides support, direction, and encouragement for the city’s residential communities to help maintain character and identities.
The department manages and promotes several important Myrtle Beach landmarks including Charlie’s Place and the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum and Education Center. Early Motown performers brought their music to Charlie’s Place. As a unique nightclub and hotel, it provided a place for African-American artists of the day to perform, including Dizzy Gillespie, Little Richard, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and many others. The School Museum and Education Center is a tangible example of how citizens, neighborhoods, businesses, and governments can work together to preserve the historic record and create new opportunities. The new old school is a functioning part of the community and proud addition to the neighborhood.
