Carolina Forest Rotary Finance Panel

Last week, we enjoyed short presentations by our three financial/accounting professionals in our club – Michael Moss, Shamar Brown and Ann Marie Nicosia.

Michael noted that he has most recently been a “business evaluation consultant”.  Currently, he is pursuing a certification as a financial forensic consultant.  He looks at businesses in terms of their viability.  Michael is saddened by the numerous restaurants he sees along route 17 that are closed and may never reopen.  In the past, Michael lived in London for over 20 years and was an international banking consultant.  In response to a question about golf courses, he said many courses are losing money, but the value of their land is very high, so “don’t feel too sorry for them”.

Shamar Brown is a tax accountant with a firm here in Myrtle Beach that focuses primarily on commercial clients.  He completes tax forms, pays taxes, does payrolls/withholding services for various companies.  “It is not exciting work,” said Shamar, “but essential” for many businesses to have this expertise.

Ann Marie Nicosia started out as a pre-med at Boston College, but then turned to accounting and earned an MBA in tax law.  After 30+ years doing work similar to Shamar’s current work, she has moved into consulting.  She assists companies install systems for their financial recording keeping, etc.  She is now “working for herself” which as she put it, is “a little scary”.  Once upon a time she had a license plate that said, “TAX GIRL”, but now she’s working from home with her two Yorkies.  (Put them on the payroll, Ann Marie!)
