The speaker for our October 16th meeting was the very ebullient Amy Brauner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross – Eastern South Carolina chapter.
Amy is from Tampa, and a graduate of the University of Florida. She has been at the Red Cross for 6 years, and Executive Director for the last year.
Amy noted four lines of service for the Red Cross – blood donation, local response to house fires, training in CPR, first aid and lifeguarding, and service to active military service personnel. Undergirding all of these programs is a substantial training program for volunteers in these fields.
Amy also discussed the importance of donating blood. Red Cross provides about 40% of the blood donated across the US. Just one pint of donated blood can save 3 lives or 10 babies. Individuals can also donate platelets, which are important for the treatment of cancer patients, and only last 5 days.
The specific chapter of the ARC that Amy oversees covers 7 counties, and needs to collect 200 units of blood per day to meet the demand. To donate, you can visit the local collection center adjacent to Kroger Foods in Carolina Forest.
For the servicing of victims of fires, 91% of donations go to the victims themselves. To volunteer go to https://www.redcross.org/…/about-…/locations/eastern-sc.html or call 1 – 800-RED-CROSS for more information.
