Speaker: Safeer Ahmad, Cultural Ambassador of Pakistan
Dr. Darla Domke-Damonte, fellow Carolina Forest Sunrise Rotarian, introduced our speaker Safeer Ahmad, Cultural Ambassador of Pakistan in the United States, and a student of Peace and Conflict Studies at Coastal Carolina University. Safeer’s mission is to build a cultural bridge between Pakistan and the US.
Safeer Ahmad had lots to share on Pakistan’s culture, language, and history. Pakistan came to be on August 14, 1947. The flag of Pakistan is green with a white crescent and star. Green represents the Muslim majority and white represents the non-Muslim minority. The population of Pakistan is 225 million with only 4% being non-Muslims. The national language is Urdu which is the tenth most widely spoken language in the world. Pakistan Armed Forces are ranked as the ninth most powerful military in the world. The Faisal Mosque is the sixth largest mosque in the world and the largest in South Asia. Major internationally recognized sports include cricket and polo.
Islamabad is the Capital Territory. Islamabad is the ninth largest city in Pakistan and was built as a planned city in the 1960s. It is noted for its high standard of living, abundant greenery, and safety. It has an expansive surveillance system with almost 2,000 active CCTV cameras. The city is home to twenty universities. Islamabad has a humid subtropical climate. The hottest month is June, where average highs exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Construction of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus, the region’s first mass transit line, was completed in March 2015.
